The Good Egg

Picture Book Read Aloud

book summary

The Good Egg is a follow-up to the very popular picture book by the same author, The Bad Seed. The good egg is not just good, he’s VERY good! In fact, he is a perfectionist who even gets annoyed when the other eggs in his carton don’t live up to his expectations. The other eggs are behaving so badly that the good egg starts to crack from all the anxiety and pressure of trying to be perfect. The good egg decides that he needs a break from the other eggs and decides to take some time for self care. He travels, goes on walks, reads books, and over time his cracks start to heal and he starts to feel good about himself again.

The good egg is feeling better, but he is missing his friends and decides to return to the carton with them, but promises himself that he is not going to worry as much about trying to make sure everyone is perfect. This book mixes humor with a message about the importance of slowing down, taking care of yourself, and not letting the burdens of life and the behaviors of others get you down.

suggested teaching point

On page 24, discuss with students how the illustrations are used to help convey the author’s message to the reader.

On this page, the illustration shows the good egg balancing four rocks on her head. Since an egg would break if rocks were placed on top of it, I know the author chose this illustration to make a point. What do you think is the significance of this illustration?
