book summary

Farfallina and Marcel is an adorable story about two young creatures, a caterpillar and a small grey bird who become the best of friends.  They are together every single day until one day when Farfallina wasn’t feeling well and went to lay in a tree. After coming back to the tree each and every day, Marcel figures that Farfallina has just vanished and he will never see her again.  Of course, Farfallina has spent this time transitioning to becoming a butterfly and when she finally emerges from the cocoon, she doesn’t recognize Marcel as he has now become a beautiful, grown goose. She visits the pond each and every day looking for that same little grey bird all the while not realizing that he was right in front of her.  I love this book for its focus on friendship and how our looks don’t change who we are.

suggested teaching point

On page 17, focus on vocabulary and making connections.  The goose is swimming in solitary circles.  Solitary describes something that is done alone.  What is something that you do that is solitary?  Farfallina shivered with disappointment.  Shivering is an uncontrollable shaking from being cold, frightened, scared, or excited.  When have you shivered?
