Crazy Hair Day

Picture Book Read Aloud

book summary

What’s the worst thing that could happen to kids on picture day?  That’s right. It’s a bad hair day and Stanley Birnbaum is definitely having a bad hair day.  As it turns out, Stanley thinks that it is crazy hair day at school, so his hair is supposed to be this way, as a matter of fact, his mom spent lots of time creating his amazingly crazy hair which included bright colors, spiky spikes and more.  Once he realizes his error he tries to hide the whole day in the bathroom, which doesn’t go as well as he plans. This book does wonders for reminding teachers and parents what it was like to have embarrassing things happen during childhood and it helps children to understand that embarrassing situations are for all of us, but so is kindness and inclusion.

On page 18, lead your students to discuss character's feelings.  Stanley decided to go back to class for the class picture.  Make an inference.  How is Stanley feeling as he walks down the hall?  Why do you think he is feeling that way?
