book summary

I think most of us love a childhood book about friendship.  These friendship books teach children such important lessons that extend far beyond childhood.  Amos and Boris is no exception. Amos is a tiny mouse who decides to go sailing on the ocean in his homemade boat.  While out on the boat, he fell into the water and began to drown. Boris the whale happened along at the same time and was able to save Amos and put him on his back to take him to shore.  Their travels together allowed them to build a wonderful friendship. The further you go into the story, you see that Amos was able to repay the favor and save Boris’ life as well, proving that it doesn’t matter what your size is, you have the ability to be the mighty hero to help others in need.

On page 16, focus an vocabulary and guide students to make a connection with the text.  The text says that Amos and Boris “developed a deep admiration for one other”.  When you admire someone, you have respect and appreciation for him or her.  Think about a person that you admire.  Why has this person earned your admiration?
