book summary

The Little Red Fort is a spunky, girl power version of The Little Red Hen. Ruby finds some old boards and decides that they would be perfect for building something. She tries to get her brothers to help her build, but they don’t take her seriously and tell her she doesn’t know how to build anything. But Ruby is not discouraged. She is determined to learn how to build something with the old pieces of wood. Ruby draws out her building plans, gathers the needed supplies, and begins cutting the boards. During each step in the process, she asks her brothers for help, but they keep telling her no. When Ruby finishes building the fort, by herself, her brothers want to play in it. Ruby tells them that since she had to build the fort by herself, she would play in it by herself too. The boys feel guilty and set out to make it right with Ruby. They plant flowers, make a mailbox, and plant the fort bright red. Their hard work was appreciated and helped Ruby have a change of heart so she invites her brothers to have a cookie feast in the fort.
