book summary

Rubina’s family has recently immigrated from Pakistan. Rubina was invited to her first birthday party for a friend at school. When she excitedly tells her mom about the invitation, her mom seems a bit surprised and confused as to my people would celebrate the day they were born. Rubina’s mom says she can go to the party only if she takes her younger sister, Sana, with her. Rubina does not like that idea, but she really wants to go to the party so she calls the hostess and Sana is allowed to go.

Since Sana was much younger than the other guests, she was not the perfect party guest. When the girls come home with party bags of treats, Sana eats her lollipop on the way home, but Rubina wants to save hers. Rubina wakes up the next morning to find that Sana had eaten her lollipop too!

This is a great book that highlights the challenges immigrants face when are thrust into a new culture alongside a case of sibling rivalry.

suggested teaching point

On page 17, take a look at the author’s word choice.

The text tells us that Sana is running as quick as a rat. The author chose to use a simile to show the reader how Sana was running. A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things. A simile is a phrase that begins with the words “like” or “as”. Can you think of another simile to describe how Sana is running?
