Catching the Moon: The Story of a Young Girl’s Baseball Dream tells the inspirational story of Marcenia “Toni Stone” Lyle Alberga’s childhood. Marcenia was an African American girl who loved baseball and grew up to be the first woman to play on an all-male professional baseball team. Instead of playing hopscotch or jumping rope with the girls, Marcenia could be found playing with the boys on the baseball field. One day, Gabby Street, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, showed up at their baseball field to recruit kids to attend a summer baseball camp that was being sponsored by the Cardinals. Marcenia knew the camp was only for boys and that her family could not pay for baseball cleats, but she did not let that stop her. Marcenia was determined to to show Mr. Street that she deserved to attend the camp. It took a lot of determination and hard word to prove her skills and passion to Mr. Street. Marcenia overcame the obstacles and was accepted to attend the baseball camp and was then on her way to making her dream of playing baseball professionally come true.
